Shipping & Customs Deep Dive
Transfer of Residence (TR) — Note: TR goods must be imported within 2 months of your arrival in India (extendable to 12 months by the Customs Commissioner for documented reasons). Plan your shipment timeline accordingly Rules
If you've lived abroad for at least 2 years, you can claim TR rules to import used personal effects duty-free. However, this is strictly regulated.
- Duty-Free: Used clothing, books, old furniture, kitchenware.
- Dutiable (approx 15-36%): Large flat-screen TVs (always taxed based on inch size), gold/silver above allowance, commercial goods.
- Pro Tip: Create a meticulously itemized packing manifest. Custom officials will inspect the shipment. You MUST be present in India before the shipment arrives to clear customs.
Air vs. Sea Cargo
LCL (Less than Container Load): Consolidates your items with others in a crate. Slower but cheaper for small volumes.
FCL (Full Container Load): Renting a 20ft or 40ft container exclusively. Required if moving heavy furniture, multiple appliances, and a whole house.
Importing a Car? (Don't)
While TR allows car imports under specific conditions, the customs duty can range from 125% to 200%+ of the car's assessed value. Additionally, Left-Hand Drive (LHD) vehicles are banned. Always sell your origin vehicle and buy local.
Gold, Jewelry & Cash
Gold (Personal Baggage — carried on person): Men can bring up to 20 grams (max ₹50,000 value) and women up to 40 grams (max ₹1,00,000 value) of gold jewelry duty-free as personal baggage. Important: These limits apply only to jewelry physically worn or hand-carried, NOT to gold sent in TR container shipments. Gold included in cargo/TR shipments is treated as dutiable goods and attracts approximately 9–10% customs duty regardless of quantity (Budget 2024 rates).
Cash: Any amount above $5,000 USD in currency notes or $10,000 USD in combined instruments (like Traveler's cheques) requires declaration at customs via the CDF form.
Hardware & Voltage Guide
India operates on 230V at 50Hz. Bringing US appliances (110V/60Hz) requires careful planning.
| Item Type | Voltage Support | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Laptops, Phones, Tablets | 100-240V (Dual) | Bring (Just need a plug adapter) |
| TVs & Monitors | Usually Dual (Check label) | Maybe (Customs duty applies for TVs) |
| Kitchen Appliances (Blenders, Mixers) | Strictly 110V | Sell (Motor frequency mismatch 50/60Hz burns them out even with voltage transformers) |
| High-End Audio/Gaming | Strictly 110V | Step-Down (Requires a heavy, expensive 220v-to-110v step-down transformer) |
Pets & Origin Offboarding
Pet Relocation (Dogs & Cats)
India strictly regulates pet imports. You need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Animal Quarantine and Certification Service (AQCS). Pets must be microchipped (15-digit ISO) and have a valid Rabies Titre Test (FAVN) done 30 days post-vaccination. Use a professional pet relocation agent.
US/Foreign Lease & Utilities
Negotiate early termination clauses. Keep utility accounts active until the final walk-through. Ensure the deposit return process (ACH or check) is routed to an account you can access from India.
Virtual Mailboxes
Sign up for services like US Global Mail, Anytime Mailbox, or Earth Class Mail. Retain your foreign bank accounts and no-foreign-transaction-fee credit cards by routing all physical mail to these virtual addresses.
