Quick Navigation
1. Health Insurance
Under IRDAI's 2024 reforms, the maximum waiting period for Pre-Existing Diseases (PED) has been reduced to 36 months (down from 48). There is no longer a maximum entry age cap, meaning seniors of any age can buy health insurance.

2. At-Home Care Services
The "hospital-at-home" industry is rapidly growing in India. Portea Medical, Apollo Homecare, Nightingales, and Care24 are all real, established companies operating in major metros.
Trained Attendant (Non-medical)
Assists with daily living, bathing, and mobility.
Cost (12-hr shift in metros): ₹22,500 – ₹30,000 / month
Qualified Nurse (GNM/ANM)
Handles injections, IVs, catheter care, and post-op.
Cost (12-hr shift in metros): ₹30,000 – ₹52,500 / month
Note: Costs scale up significantly for 24/7 live-in care or specialized ICU-level care.
3. Sending Money & Financial Support
100% Tax-Free Gifting
There is NO gift tax when an NRI sends money to their parents. Under Section 56(2)(x) of the Income Tax Act, gifts from a "relative" (which explicitly includes lineal ascendants like parents) are fully exempt. Money remitted is completely tax-free for the parents.
Property in Parents' Name (Benami Risk)
If an NRI directly pays for a property but registers it solely in the parents' names, it can be flagged under the Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Act.
Safe alternatives:
(a) Buy the property jointly with your parents.
(b) Formally gift the money to your parents, who then buy it.
(c) Buy it in your own name and issue a Power of Attorney (PoA) to your parents to manage it.
4. Legal Planning: Will & Power of Attorney
Will & Probate
Registration of a Will is NOT mandatory in India. An unregistered Will is legally valid as long as it is properly executed and attested by two witnesses. However, registration is highly recommended to prevent disputes.
Probate update: As of late 2025 (Repealing and Amending Act), probate is no longer mandatory for Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, and Jains anywhere in India; it is now voluntary.
Power of Attorney (PoA)
An NRI can grant a PoA to parents or siblings for property management. Execute the PoA at the Indian Embassy/Consulate in the US, then send it to India for stamping and registration.
Note: A registered PoA is mandatory for selling or transferring property.
